R33 Sterndrive vs. R33 Outboard

Cobalt R33 OutboardBigger and Better

With the introduction of the R33 Series, Cobalt has offered buyers two ways to experience more luxury, size and performance in a day boat, via the R33 Sterndrive and the R33 Outboard.

The R33 Series starts with a contemporary design with a deeper cockpit, more freeboard and a more spacious interior with larger bow and cockpit areas. Both the styling and hull layout are the same for either engine configuration.

Twin Takes on Luxury Performance

In effect, the two models are twins. Both check in with an impressive 33’ 4” LOA and a 10’ 6” beam. Both feature sleek lines, agile handling, superb performance and advanced appointments.

Standard amenities include a Garmin glass cockpit with multiple touchscreen displays, ultra-fast USB-C charging stations, 42(!) cupholders, a wealth of storage space and a cabin that accommodates sleeping as well as seating.

Exclusive Audio and Stability Options

Both models also incorporate a number of unique features that set them apart, including the industry’s first Harman Kardon premium marine audio system – a Cobalt exclusive – along with a Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilization system. And both R33 boats are yacht-certified, letting buyers know they’re purchasing a boat that has been certified to the high standards of the National Marine Manufacturers Association by passing an extensive physical inspection.

Power and Design Differences

The two models differ mainly in their power options and in two key design features. Standard on both is the choice of twin Volvo or Mercruiser engines, with the R33 Sterndrive’s twins generating up to 860 horsepower. The R33 Outboard, however, goes one better with a triple powerplant upgrade that makes up to 900 horsepower and is capable of reaching speeds in excess of 60 mph.

On the design side, the R33 Sterndrive offers an integral hydraulic swim platform that’s not found on the R33 OB, while the outboard’s floor plan provides a choice of either an L-seat or a galley.

Covering Lakes, Rivers, Coasts and Oceans

So, which is the better choice? Given that the R33 Sterndrive and R33 Outboard are vastly more similar than different, the answer is driven by whether you live on a lake and focus on watersports, or whether you live near sale water and use your boat for a variety of activities.

Either way, the R33 Series incorporates a wealth of innovative technology to enhance the day boating experience, with advancements in design, convenience and overall performance, and the size to deliver excitement to a large number of family and friends.
