Originally introduced by our sister brand Malibu Boats in 2013, Surf Gate™ has been officially recognized multiple times as the best surf system on the market. And it’s easy to see why. What is Surf Gate?

Surf Gate refers to a patented system of two high-speed hydraulically actuated gates installed at the aft corners of the transom, one on either side of the boat. These gates create an endless surfable wave on either side of the boat.

The system is effortlessly controlled from the helm thanks to our Cobalt Custom Wave Technology. Simply turn on speed control, select your rider profile, and the system will automatically configure the boat as per the pre-saved profile setting for that rider. This includes automatically setting up the ballast, drive trim and speed. Meanwhile, the gate on the selected side of the boat will deploy after you put the throttle down.

Surf Gate also allows the driver to switch the surf wave from right to left, even while underway. All of this is intuitively controlled via our built-in interface in the Garmin glass cockpit.

Even without presets, simply select which side of the boat your rider wishes to surf on and choose the wave you want. From there, the Custom Wave Technology system will do the rest.

The Cobalt Surf Series Explained

The Cobalt Surf Series has been designed from the ground up to maximize the Surf Gate system. In fact, Cobalt is the only brand that has integrated the best-in-class Surf Gate™ technology with a specifically designed surf hull form and gate shape with the Volvo FWD powertrain to generate a world-class wave that will absolutely rival some of the best competition towboats on the market.

Cobalt’s Custom Wave Technology is propelled by a high-performance Volvo Penta FWD powertrain with unique forward-facing Duoprops, positioned under the boat for extra safety. The engine effectively pulls the boat through the water, resulting in better bite and more efficient and smooth acceleration and speed, all producing increased fuel economy.

Cobalt Surf Series boats are equipped with multiple hard ballast tanks with as much as 2,350 pounds of ballast. This allows you to better scale the wake and the wave for all ages and ability levels.

The hull form and gate shape on every Cobalt Boat is also specifically designed to maximize the performance of the Surf Gate system. Cobalt’s specific hull design along with the ballast system, allows the boat to sit deep in the water, maximizing displacement. Meanwhile, our cruise control feature allows for consistent speeds to create a long, clean wave that is adjustable for every rider.

Surf Series in Detail

The Cobalt Surf Series includes three boats: The R4 Surf, the R6 Surf, and the R8 Surf.

Cobalt R4 Surf

The Cobalt R4 Surf offers 24’3″ in length and an 8’6″ beam, making it the perfect entry point for our Surf series. Offering all of the space, amenities and performance you can expect of any of our larger models, the R4 Surf is ready to deliver a perfect wave every time.

Cobalt R6 Surf

The Cobalt R6 Surf is next up and measures in at 25’9″ LOA with a beam of 8’6″. The R6 Surf features Cobalt’s Custom Wave Technology surf system that includes Surf Gate, the Volvo FWD powertrain Cobalt’s Surf boats are famous for, and a hull that is specially designed for flawless integration with Surf Gate.

All of this delivers a perfect wave for a day of excitement on the water, no matter the age or skill of your rider.

Cobalt R8 Surf

While its beam is the same as the other R series boats at 8’6″, the Cobalt R8 Surf offers slightly more length at 27’10”. The extra space is perfect for larger boating families or boaters who like to spend time on the water with larger groups of friends.

As with the other R models, the R8 offers the complete Surf Gate system within Cobalt’s Custom Wave Technology, so you can be sure that the larger size of this boat is no impediment to its ability to deliver just as successfully as the others in the Surf series.
